Ontario Boom Lift License

Ontario Boom Lift License - Only completely certified individuals must operate an aerial boom lift. Qualification could be obtained through a combination of sessions in the classroom and practical training with the particular kind of aerial lift that would be used on the job. A License is needed for anyone who works on or operates an aerial boom lift.

Different types of vehicle-mounted aerial devices comprise extensible boom platforms, aerial ladders, articulating boom platforms, vertical towers, and any combination of these types.

There are several basic safety rules which apply to all boom lifts. Worker safety while inside the basket is a top priority. Workers should have on a body harness and lanyard connected to the basket or boom. Never tie off to an equipment, an adjacent pole or a structure. Employees should stand on the basket floor, and never climb or sit on the basket edge. The manufacturer's load limitations must be followed.

Lift operators should be certified to operate an aerial lift. The manufacturer's manual must be kept inside the lift and the operator should be familiar with all aspects of that specific unit. Operators are responsible for ensuring that safety measures are followed in the operation of the lift. A daily test of lift controls must be performed. Position outriggers and set brakes (if they are utilized) on a stable surface or on pads. When working on a slope, make use of wheel chocks.

The aerial lift vehicle should never be moved whilst a worker is in the basket of an elevated boom, unless they are using equipment that are specifically designed for this. Articulating boom and extensible boom platforms used as employees carriers should have accessible, plainly marked, upper controls. Except for in emergency circumstances, lower controls must not be used to override upper controls unless the person in the lift gives permission.

While working from an aerial lift, do not wear tree or pole climbers.
Do not alter the insulated part of the aerial lift.

When operating a boom lift next to power lines, make certain that the lines are di-electrically tested according to local rules.
